Gardens of Dreams brings together in a unique fashion the works of Alberto Giacometti and Salvador Dalí around their idea of an imaginary garden. This book highlights their friendship as well as their common taste for the exploration of dreamed spaces. Both were members of the surrealist group and frequented the same circles. Their conversation was bright, intellectual, creative and their works engaged in a fruitful dialogue. At the beginning of the 1930s, Giacometti and Dalí imagined together an extraordinary garden for the Viscount and Viscountess de Noailles. This four-handed project, known through drawings, includes surrealist artworks by Alberto Giacometti within a vast dreamlike landscape typical of Dalí’s style. This phantasmatic landscape includes a sculptural environment conceived by Giacometti for an open-air space: Model for a Square. For the first time, this has now been reconstructed at the Institut Giacometti in Paris. It illustrates the concept of the garden shared by Giacometti and Dalí and their taste for ambiguous shapes and images.
